The lodge was awarded the Elks National Foundation $2,000 Spotlight Grant. This is a new grant for lodges to assist an emergency shelter or transitional housing facility specifically for veterans in their community. This grant must be an Elk led project to provide support and/or services for the shelter.
Our lodge has chosen Bernie's Place in South Lebanon. Bernie's Place provides transitional housing and other skills and support to Veterans experiencing homelessness.
The first phase of this project was to rehab discarded lockers so that residents would have a place they could store their personal items. This entailed dismantling and moving the lockers to the Flannery’s garage for rehab. We straightened, cleaned, sanded and painted the lockers two coats of paint. We then moved and installed them at the facility. Thanks to all those that supported the effort as it was labor intensive and required moving them twice.
We are also using funds from the grant to purchase new much need appliances for the facility. The lodge also is going to replace outdated lighting to new LED fixtures donated by a local vendor.
